Sail shades have become very popular over the last decade. Aside from providing shade, they also add an abstract and artistic element to any outdoor space. It is important to design sail shade structures intelligently and correctly to make sure that you maximize the shade, aesthetic value and durability of the shade structure.

Sail shade structures are by far the most expensive type of shade one can purchase. This is because each shade is custom designed and stitched. A whole array of people from engineers, to metal worker and seamstresses are involved in making the concept a reality. So, the first rule of designing a sail shade is: Go BIG! Once you get over the initial sticker shock of a quality sail shade structure, it is wise to consider investing the extra money needed to go with the largest structure you can afford.

The next important step in designing a sail shade structure is the quality of its construction. Unlike a traditional shade structure, sail shade canopies are not supported by steel structural members, this means that only the connection points and the cables are supporting the canopy. The shade fabric will be under tremendous amounts of stress from gravity and the wind. It is crucial to use quality sail shades when installing, otherwise they simply won't last.

The last important step in designing a sail shade structure is slope and tension of the canopy. We have seen a lot of poorly designed sail shades that tend to pool and puddle water in the center. This puts unnecessary stress on the entire structure and usually results in someone having a very wet day. Always be sure that the shade utilizes a cable tension system, free hanging shades will not stand up to the test of time.
